ADEN’s story has begun …

Posted by dbreynolds on January 14, 2013

Yummy, isn’t he? As I posted on Facebook earlier this week, I’ve officially begun Aden’s story, although I’ve been working on the outline for sometime, so I already know where it’s going. Balbina L. commented that Aden will be the first of my vampires with a tattoo, but that’s not quite true. He’ll be the first Vampire Lord with a tattoo, but there are others among their security teams with tattoos, including Elke. And anyone who’s read my Vignettes knows that Cyn has a tattoo, right? It was a Valentine’s Day present for Raphael. Anyone know what the image is and where it is?
.
SNAP CONTEST: The first three people who email me at dbreynolds@live.com with the correct answer to that last sentence (image and location) will win an autographed copy of the Limited Print Edition of BETRAYED, plus some of my cool new bookmarks.
.
And speaking of bookmarks, specifically anyone who’s waiting for bookmarks … I ordered some new ones, brand new design. There was a delay over the holidays, but the new series bookmarks came last week, and the cool new LUCAS/BETRAYED bookmarks are scheduled to arrive this week. We’ll start sending them out as soon as they get here.
.
Let’s see, what else … We saw Zero Dark Thirty last week. Excellent movie, loved it! It’s a travesty that Kathryn Bigelow wasn’t nominated for Director, also that Ben Affleck wasn’t given a nod for Argo, another great film. Affleck got some “eff you” mojo tonight, though, when he won the Golden Globe for picture and director.
.
And on TV, JUSTIFIED’s new season premiered on Tuesday, with the sexy Raylan Givens being a bad boy. The very best kind.
.
I’ve updated my 100 Books Challenge page. I’m currently reading #8, so in good shape for the year so far. Gotta build up some buffer books for when I start crushing on deadlines. I haven’t reviewed them all, but you can find the reviews I’ve done on my Goodreads page HERE.
.
Okay, I’m going back to work, all wrapped up in my big fluffy robe because it’s been effing freezing around here the last week. And, yes, we have heat, but it makes the air so dry … let’s face it, we’re just not used to freezing nights and everything that goes with it. But my fingers are warm and flying over the keyboard, and that’s all that matters.
.
See you all next week.
xoxo

2 MORE DAYS ‘TIL BETRAYED!

Posted by dbreynolds on August 13, 2012

I can’t believe it’s here already, but BETRAYED’s official release date is Wednesday. I’m on Amazon watch, in case it pops early, and I’ll let you know if it does. By the way, the image above is the final hi-rez version of the cover. If you click on it, you can see the cover in full beautiful color!
.
In the meantime, there are more early reviews of BETRAYED, and they’re all good. You can check them out on GOODREADS. And at DAWN and WINNIE BOOK REVIEWS
.
And then because Wednesday is RELEASE DAY, I’ve got TWO guest posts and giveaways that you won’t want to miss. Our favorite Huff ‘n Puff reporter will be visiting this Wednesday, August 15th, with Cyn and Raphael at PARANORMAL HAVEN In addition to the guest post, The Haven will be posting their review of BETRAYED, and I’ll be giving away a free copy of the novella, too.
.
Also on Wednesday, I’ll be dropping in at I SMELL SHEEP where I’ll be the Guest Chef and bringing along my recipe for the perfect RAPHAEL. Yum!! And, of course, another giveaway of BETRAYED. And Sharon will be posting her own review of BETRAYED, too.
.
And if you don’t win either of those giveaways, not to worry. I have lots more promos in the coming weeks. I’ll be posting them all here, and on Facebook, too. So stay in touch.
.
Also this week, my wonderful writing partner, Steve McHugh, posted a new interview with yours truly. If you want to know why I’ll survive the coming Zombie Apocalypse, and a few other things, too, drop by STEVE McHUGH’s BLOG and check it out. And while you’re there, be sure and check out Steve’s fantastic first book, CRIMES AGAINST MAGIC. It’s getting nothing but glowing reviews all around!
.
On the subject of FACEBOOK, by the way, they’re forcing me into their Timeline format. I’ve been retooling the damn thing for days, so I’ve gone ahead and jumped with it instead of waiting for their drop dead date. I’ll be keeping an eye on it, to see if I’ve screwed anything up. I’m not crazy about it, but you can’t fight, er, um, progress(?) LOL
.
And speaking of progress, I DID IT! I cleaned out the underwear drawer. I tossed an entire CPK huge bag of stuff, and now every time I open the drawer, I’m startled and reaching for the wrong thing. And I feel so proud every time. LIttle victories, people. Little victories.
.
Also, I posted this on FACEBOOK, but I also want to call your attention to a lovely new review of THE VIGNETTES from THE ROMANCE REVIEWS! Always nice to hear!
.
TV Reviews … first, I’m sad to report that LONGMIRE had its season finale last night. I feel as though the season just started and now it’s over already. ::sniff:: FALLING SKIES is still going, and I admit I’m not at all surprised that 2nd Mass didn’t fit well into Charleston’s underground mall world. I do have a question, though. Where are they getting all that food they’re serving on the buffet line? They must be going above ground for that, right? And then there’s ::sigh:: TRUE BLOOD. I have no idea what’s going on there, and no interest either. When the strongest character in the show is TARA, a character I never liked, we’ve got trouble. Bill is … I don’t know what Bill’s game is. Pam is a total wimp, which she is NOT in the books. And Eric, who should be stronger than just about everyone except Russell, is one of the weakest vamps around. Russell at least is in character, and now that he’s broken free, maybe he’ll even be interesting. And Sam and Luna better rescue Emma quick, because that storyline makes me a little sick. And then, yes, I have a question. Apparently a Stackhouse ancestor made a deal with Waldo that essentially gives him Sookie. So far, so good. Just one tiny, little question. I though Sookie’s fae blood came to her through her Gran–the one who died in the first season. But Gran was only a Stackhouse by marriage, so if someone made a deal with the fairies, it shouldn’t be a Stackhouse, should it? Of course, maybe it’s only in the books that the fae blood comes through Gran. And that’s it for this week’s TV. One of my favorite shows, STRIKE BACK is picking up its new season next week, I think, so that consoles me for the loss of LONGMIRE. A little bit.
.
And that’s it for this week.
.
See you all on the other side of BETRAYED! Squeeeeee!

MEMORIAL DAY 2012

Posted by dbreynolds on May 28, 2012

Happy Memorial Day Weekend to my readers in the U.S. This is the official start of summer, the first long weekend of the season. There will be barbeques, parades and parties. But in all of our celebrating, let’s not forget the real reason for this day, and that’s to remember all of those who came when called, and who gave their lives for their country.

As I mentioned above, this weekend kicks off the summer holiday. People are graduating and getting married, taking well-earned vacations and just kicking back. So, just in case you’re heading for the beach and want something quick for your e-reader, my VAMPIRE VIGNETTES are now available in Kindle format through the Kindle Owners Lending Library. The library is open to anyone with an Amazon Prime Membership. You can only borrow one book at a time, but you can keep it as long as you need to. I’ve borrowed several books from their library, and it works really well.
.
Oh, and … LUCAS is done. At least in this round of things. Yay! I need to check one little thing, then it’s off to my writing partners. And I miss him already. It’s so sad. Of course, before long I’ll be back with him as I do revision after revision, but for now I miss the vamp.
.
Small screen update … This week’s GAME OF THRONES was … meh. Lots of yelling and screaming and stabbing and crunching. SPOILERS!!! And can someone tell me how Tywin Lannister (father of all the Lannisters, not his similarly named youngest son, Tyrion) … anyway, how did Tywin’s horse-mounted troops show up on the seaward side of the gate? How’d they get there? Swim?? Meanwhile, THE KILLING is slowly winding down to reveal the killer. SPOILERS!! Of course, by this time, everyone’s lives have been ruined. Sure, poor Rosie is dead, but her parents are broken, her brothers permanently damaged; Linden has lost her son, her fiance’ and maybe her job; Holder has discovered that his sponsor—the man he credited with saving his life, the man he considered a hero—thinks of him as a loser junkie; Aunt Terry has been revealed as a hooker; Darren Richmond has been crippled for life (and no more sex life, either,) and Rosie’s teacher Ahmed will be LUCKY if he survives at all, and will undoubtedly have brain damage if he does. Anyone else?? Sheesh. while waiting for the last few KILLING episodes, I’ve started a new DVD series for my exercise distraction, one recommended by some readers, and that’s WAKING THE DEAD, which is a BBC series. I’m still getting over the differences between U.S. and U.K. police procedure, but it was only distracting for the first couple of shows. Now, I’m into it, and I’m only on Season 2, which means I’ve lots of shows to catch up on. Though it’s somewhat inconvenient that every case takes two episodes to be solved, which means I never get the whole story in a single bout on my Elliptical! LOL
.
On the smaller screen … I posted 4 new reviews on my WHAT I’M READING NOW page. The four reviews actually represent 6 books, since I included all three of the existing Richard Castle books in one review.
.
So … LUCAS is almost on his way, which means I now turn to the Cyn/Raphael e-novella. I always love spending time with those two. They were my first, after all. And some of my relatives have been known to suggest that Cyn is me. (I wish!) So, it’s like old home week when I go back to their story.
.
I’m going to get back to LUCAS and look up that one last bit of research, but first, don’t forget to check out the BRENDA NOVAK ON-LINE AUCTION FOR DIABETES RESEARCH. The auction is down to the final days, which is when most of the real bidding gets underway. There are some spectacular items up for grabs, plus a couple of raffle giveaways that you can get in on for only a $10 ticket. I’ve already won two auctions, plus a special one-day giveaway drawing! Yay, me!
.
Okay, have a wonderful week, and I’ll see you back here next Sunday!
.

Rounding the Final Stretch, and it’s (almost) … LUCAS!

Posted by dbreynolds on May 21, 2012

Yep, tonight’s update is a short one, because I’m this close to finishing revisions on LUCAS. Then I’ll send it off to my oh-so-talented writing partners, and while they’re tearing that apart (er, I mean reading and enjoying it) I can do the last few revisions to the first Cyn/Raphael novella and get it off to my publisher. Because, you know, the sooner I get it to HER, the sooner she’ll get it to YOU!
.
And speaking of Cyn and Raphael, so far they’re winning the tally on which couple I should feature in a summer Vignette. I’ve received posts here and on Facebook and elsewhere, plus e-mails, and Cyn and Raphael are ahead so far. Of course, they’re getting that e-novella, too. So, any of you who hunger for some Cyn/Raphael action will have plenty this summer, either way.
.
A quick BITES FIGHTS update … it looks as if Lynsay Sands is going to win the latest bracket, but that’s okay, too. It was AMAZING that DUNCAN was nominated and even more amazing that we made it through that first round. I never thought we’d get this far, and I want to thank all of you who first, nominated DUNCAN, and then went over and voted for him not once but twice. I’m walking away from this fight a very happy author. And by the way, you all should keep voting and keep checking your brackets, because there are some terrific prizes at the end of it all!
.
Media round-up … on the big screen, I FINALLY saw The Avengers and what a terrific movie!! I LOVED IT! Loved Mark Ruffalo as The Hulk/Bruce Banner, lusted after Chris Hemsworth as Thor (although, nothing new there, I lusted after him in THOR, too.) Robert Downey, Jr. is the perfect Tony Stark, and there was so much sly humor in this movie! Legolas! Bwahahahaha. Excellent film. Now I want to see BATTLESHIP and then PROMETHEUS! I think Logan Marshall-Green (from Prometheus) is just the sexiest guy! I loved him in Dark Blue.
.
Moving on down to the small screen … The Killing continues to torment viewers with a new conspiracy every effing week. Just a few more to go, and we’ll finally find out who killed Rosie. But then the question becomes … what happens next? Do Linden and Holder move on to the next case? And, if so, will they make us wait two MORE seasons to find out the killer in that one? Don’t know if I could stick around for that. GRIMM concluded (sort of) with (SPOILERS!) Nick finally telling Juliet about what he was … and doing a really lousy job of it, too! So, now, I guess Juliet is Snow White? Okaaaay. GAME OF THRONES just sort of depressed me this week. Still waiting for Jon Snow’s missing wolf, still can’t understand half of what’s going on there (and I’ve read the books, too.) And I have a question … Rob Stark and Princess Leia (or whoever) are stripping and having sex right there on the rug … don’t they worry about someone stepping into the tent? Just curious. And waiting anxiously for TRUE BLOOD’s premier with fingers crossed that they don’t completely destroy it.
.
Annnd down to the smallest screen, i.e., my Kindle … I’ve a few books to review this week, but they’ll wait until LUCAS’s story is on its way. Not everything I read was review-worthy (remember, I don’t really review, I recommend) but a few definitely were, so I’ll be posting those soon.
.
Okay, I really must get back to LUCAS, now. Happy Victoria Day to all of my Canadian readers, and a good week to all of you everywhere.
.
xoxo

WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOU’RE NOT WRITING?

Posted by dbreynolds on March 12, 2012

This is a question I’m frequently asked. To which my darling husband would say, “Ha! She’s always writing. I wish that were true, because the books would roll out a lot faster! My heroine in this regard is Nora Roberts who really must write all the time, because that woman produces more books in a year than anyone I know!! And I read every one of them, too. La Nora’s books, I mean, not every book written by anyone in a year.
.
My answer to the question of what I do in my spare time is considerably more varied than my husband’s. I do A LOT of reading, and in all different genres. My first love was Science Fiction, especially military Science Fiction, and Fantasy. Some of the best writers out there are writing in those two genres. And, of course, I read tons of Urban Fantasy and Paranormal Romance, and some contemporary romance, too. Witness Nora Roberts and her alter ego J. D. Robb (although the latter is slightly futuristic.)
.
I also read mysteries and thrillers, which leads to my current reading obsession — Vince Flynn and his wonderful Mitch Rapp series! That’s his latest book Kill Shot, although chronologically it’s the second book in the Mitch Rapp story. You can find the entire list in chronological order, HERE. It’s fortunate in a way that I found the series late, because I get to read the early story in order. Apparently, Flynn started with the older, more experienced Mitch, then went back and filled in the back story. I actually picked the series up with TRANSFER OF POWER, and I’ve been devouring the entire back list every since! Mitch Rapp is a CIA black ops guy with a strong sense of right and wrong, and no tolerance for the bad guys. Flynn’s writing puts you right in the moment with Mitch as he wrestles not just with the logistics of getting the job done, but the sticky politicians and bureaucrats who want to get in his way. Mitch is not a diplomat. But he is a honorable man doing a dirty job. These stories could easily have been two dimensional, but Vince Flynn doesn’t flinch from the political and diplomatic realities, either. Mitch is a very human character, with strengths and weaknesses, just like the rest of us. He just happens to have a lot more in the strength category. If you love thrillers, especially international thrillers with plenty of special ops stuff thrown in, you’ll love Vince Flynn.
.
I did warn you I was obsessed, right? :D
.
What else do I do, besides read and write? I exercise regularly (b.o.r.i.n.g.) And I go to movies, which is kind of a natural since I worked in the business for years. I’m really, really looking forward to The Avengers!!! Yay! I went and saw Safe House (Denzel Washington and the delectable Ryan Reynolds) with my darling husband this week. I’ve wanted to see this movie ever since it came out, but … not even RR’s abs could bail this one out. ::sigh:: It was not good. So disappointed. But The Avengers! Squeeeee!
.
Also, this week in my copious spare time (not) I ordered my new i-Pad 3. OMG. I totally fell for it. The clincher was the supposed HD quality image. I wear glasses all the effing time and anything that helps me see better is a selling point. So, I went for it. I’m a sucker, I know. But it should arrive FriiiiDaaaaay! LOL
.
The i-Pad arrival means I’ll finally be able to catch up with my Kindlegraph requests, by the way. So that’s a good thing, right?
.
I did receive one more review of The Vampire Vignettes this week. Cynthia (Artemis) from Bitten by Paranormal Romance gave the Vignettes Anthology a Scorcher Award and said …
.
Yes, they are short stories. Yes, you will find them more enjoyable if you have read the series. Yes, the ebook cost is 99ยข. But come on, this ninety-nine cents is a pittance for something that will bring you incalculable gratification. Did I mention you should keep your significant other close at hand?
.
And, on the writing front (because my darling husband is correct, I AM spending A LOT of time writing these days) LUCAS is speeding along very, very nicely. Lots of vampire butt being kicked in this one, enough to please my most bloodthirsty reader, while plenty of the other stuff (i.e., romance and sex) for everyone else.
.
Okay, did I mention I’m doing A LOT of writing? Because I have to get back to it. Lucas is poised in the door of a helicopter and he’s not too happy with me that I’m making him wait!! (hee, hee)
.
See you all next week. Same place, same time. And Happy St. Patrick’s Day from me and my Irish lad, Lucas.

AND THE WINNER IS …

Posted by dbreynolds on February 27, 2012

Hmm, yeah. I watched the Academy Awards tonight, can you tell? Not live, of course. I DVR’d the whole thing and didn’t start watching until I had about a hour and half recorded. And even with that huge buffer, by the time I reached the end (what with fast forwarding through all the boring parts and commercials) I finished pretty much on schedule! I was disappointed Brad Pitt didn’t win for Moneyball, which was a terrific movie. He’s underrated as an actor. And if it couldn’t be him, then it should have been George Clooney whose performance in The Descendants ranged flawlessly from the comic to the tragic. But Harvey Weinstein strikes again. Oh, well.
.
The night’s oddest moment … Angelina sticking her pale leg out through her black dress in an obvious and calculated pose. What was that? And bravo to the writer who dared to spoof her pose, too.
.
But back to the world of writing … that would be ME. :) I don’t have much to report this week, because I’m writing A LOT! And when I’m deep into my writing zen, not much else goes on. I am continuing to explore Kindlegraph and have discovered via the creator’s Twitter feed that the only real way to do an actual signature (as opposed to simply having my name typed in a script font) is to sign via i-Pad. Good going, dude! Here’s an idea for a future enhancement … figure out a way to let authors scan and store their signature!!
.
So now I’m exploring the purchase of an i-Pad. I wanted one anyway, this just advances the timetable. I went shopping at Apple.com and, of course, I’m immediately called upon to make tortuous decisions — Wi-Fi? or Wi-Fi + 3G? Meh. I don’t get cell coverage at my house (too many hills) so the 3G isn’t much use to me. But then I starting thinking of all the what ifs and it drives me nuts. Same for the 16/32/64 GB question. I really only need 16 for what I have in mind, but what if after I get it, I discover all sorts of other uses, and I end up wanting to do this or add that or … Gah!!!! I did decline the cover available on-line, since it looks cool, but only covers the screen. Wonder why they did that? As for the other, I guess I’ll have to visit the damn store and figure out what to do. Darn.
.
So, hold on, Kindlegraphers. I’m working on it.
.
I’m also working on new bookmarks and bookplates with my designer, and they’re going to be so beautiful! I’ll still send out the existing bookmarks until they’re gone, so if you want those (each features a different book cover) better get your order in. And just a reminder that you need to send me an SASE with TWO stamps if you want bookmarks and/or autograph plates. Full details can be found under the FREEBIES tab above.
.
Oh, oh, one last thing … the lovely Annette at RomFan Reviews will be posting a review of The Vignettes Anthology on TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 28, and she’ll be giving away a copy of the book, either print or e-version, winner’s choice. I’ll remind everyone on Facebook and Twitter, but don’t forget to stop by.
.
And, OMG, there are only three days left in February and I HAVE to finish the Cyn/Raphael Novella before 1 March. Two scenes left to write—gotta go back to work.
.
Have a wonderful week, and I’ll see you back here next Sunday, when I’ll be hard at work on LUCAS again!! Not that working on Lucas (hard or otherwise) is EVER a chore. (heh, heh)

SO WHAT DID YOU DO THIS WEEK?

Posted by dbreynolds on February 20, 2012

A surprisingly quiet week! The early days were exciting with the Cyn/Sarah interview at LITERAL ADDICTION’s Character’s Corner, and then the first peek at Raphael’s new lieutenant at PARANORMAL HAVEN on Valentine’s Day!
.
And speaking of PARANORMAL HAVEN, Steph posted the first review of my new VIGNETTES ANTHOLOGY, saying …
.
“Vampires in America: The Vignettes is a fabulous example of short stories done right. In them, you get to see what happens after a couple has mated and the book ends. Each is a quick read and always steamy but they’re more to them than just sex. You’ll get to see how powerful vampire Lords deal with troubles in their areas and see a personal side that’s not on display for the public. Nothing like what you’ll get from reading one of the full length books but they’re still a real treat.”

.
The Anthology is now available everywhere it’s supposed to be. You can find the links to the right under the cover image. And the e-book on Amazon, Nook, and Smashwords is only .99 cents!
.
And speaking of e-books, I just signed up for Kindlegraph. HERE’S THE PAGE FOR MY BOOKS! I’m working on getting my signature to look at least remotely like my own. It’s not working well on my laptop’s mouse pad—looks like a toddler wrote it. I’m thinking it will be better on an i-pad, but it might take me a few days to get it right. At least right enough that my OCD control freak self can live with it! It’s either that or go with their canned signature, which doesn’t make much sense to me. So, if you request a sig through Kindlegraph, give it a few days! I’m checking in there, but I’m still working on my sig!!
.
What else, what else … I updated my What I’m Reading Now page. I finally read several books that I loved, so I have something to recommend!
.
And as long as I have you here … anyone else watching Once Upon a Time? What’s with David and Mary Margaret? We need to see some forward progress in their relationship! And when did David become such a weasel? I used to really like him, but they’re making him weak and unlikeable. And the whole Kathryn reconciling with the Bitch Queen and telling her about the letter was just a little toO convenient. And how creepy is it that the Bitch Queen has a key to every house in the town? Ick. And who the heck is August Wayne Booth, and what was he doing with Henry’s book? It LOOKED like he was adding pages to it, the pages that dealt with Abigail/Kathryn’s long lost frozen-in-gold love. And if he can add pages and affect reality … then WHO is he? Bottom line: the story needs to make some forward progress on SOMEONE’s happily-ever-after, or I’m going to lose interest.
.
Huh. Obviously, that episode bothered me more than I thought! :D
.
Okay, time for me to get back to some serious work. Cyn is once again on the hunt, Jared is discovering Raphael’s mate isn’t exactly a soccer mom, and Lucas (darling Lucas) has made an appearance! Squeeeee!
.
See you all next week!

VIGNETTES, GIVEAWAYS AND INTERVIEWS!

So … for anyone who missed it, the Vampire Vignettes anthology hit Amazon early this week. I’ve listed the BUY links below, as well as beneath the cover to the right.

I’m also doing some guest blogs and giveaways in conjunction with the release. First up is LITERAL ADDICTION PARANORMAL BOOK CLUB and BOOK MONSTER REVIEWS. They’ve posted a character interview with Cyn and Sarah over at LITERAL ADDICTION’S CHARACTERS CORNER. And then Monday night, Feb. 13th, I’ll be back at LITERAL ADDICTION’S AUTHOR CHAT beginning 5:00 pm Pacific/Mountain (7:00 pm Central/8:00 pm Eastern.) I’ll be answering questions and just hanging out, so stop by and say “hi” if you have a chance. LITERAL ADDICTION/BOOK MONSTER REVIEWS will also be giving away copies of the Vignettes Anthology, print or e-format, winner’s choice.
.
But that’s not all! I’ll be at PARANORMAL HAVEN on Valentine’s Day, giving my readers a peek at Raphael’s new lieutenant (Juro doesn’t want the job) and giving away another copy of the Vignettes anthology!
.
And speaking of giveaways, I’m happy to announce that all of the winners of my new blog subscriber giveaway have checked in and have either received, or soon will be receiving their copies of the Anthology. I expect to receive my print copies on Tuesday (Monday being a postal holiday in the U.S.) Copies will then go out Wednesday to any of the winners who requested a print copy as his/her prize.
.
I want to thank all of my readers who found the Anthology on Amazon–sometimes before I did–when it popped up there unexpectedly. And thanks to Julie-Anne for locating the Amazon UK link for me! I never would have found that one. Also, Amazon was inexplicably confused by the existence of both e and print versions of the book (duh.) and it was difficult to find the print version while they updated their database and linked the two versions (Really? In the year 2012, it takes 3-5 days??) But that seems to be cleared up by now. Phew!
.
In the meantime, I’m back to work and the writing continues, with the very first Cyn/Raphael novella occupying my late nights once again. This is a big year for my vampires. So many stories to be told!
.
So, I’ll just get back to work now! And I’ll see you all back here next week!
