MEMORIAL DAY 2012

Posted by dbreynolds on May 28, 2012

Happy Memorial Day Weekend to my readers in the U.S. This is the official start of summer, the first long weekend of the season. There will be barbeques, parades and parties. But in all of our celebrating, let’s not forget the real reason for this day, and that’s to remember all of those who came when called, and who gave their lives for their country.

As I mentioned above, this weekend kicks off the summer holiday. People are graduating and getting married, taking well-earned vacations and just kicking back. So, just in case you’re heading for the beach and want something quick for your e-reader, my VAMPIRE VIGNETTES are now available in Kindle format through the Kindle Owners Lending Library. The library is open to anyone with an Amazon Prime Membership. You can only borrow one book at a time, but you can keep it as long as you need to. I’ve borrowed several books from their library, and it works really well.
.
Oh, and … LUCAS is done. At least in this round of things. Yay! I need to check one little thing, then it’s off to my writing partners. And I miss him already. It’s so sad. Of course, before long I’ll be back with him as I do revision after revision, but for now I miss the vamp.
.
Small screen update … This week’s GAME OF THRONES was … meh. Lots of yelling and screaming and stabbing and crunching. SPOILERS!!! And can someone tell me how Tywin Lannister (father of all the Lannisters, not his similarly named youngest son, Tyrion) … anyway, how did Tywin’s horse-mounted troops show up on the seaward side of the gate? How’d they get there? Swim?? Meanwhile, THE KILLING is slowly winding down to reveal the killer. SPOILERS!! Of course, by this time, everyone’s lives have been ruined. Sure, poor Rosie is dead, but her parents are broken, her brothers permanently damaged; Linden has lost her son, her fiance’ and maybe her job; Holder has discovered that his sponsor—the man he credited with saving his life, the man he considered a hero—thinks of him as a loser junkie; Aunt Terry has been revealed as a hooker; Darren Richmond has been crippled for life (and no more sex life, either,) and Rosie’s teacher Ahmed will be LUCKY if he survives at all, and will undoubtedly have brain damage if he does. Anyone else?? Sheesh. while waiting for the last few KILLING episodes, I’ve started a new DVD series for my exercise distraction, one recommended by some readers, and that’s WAKING THE DEAD, which is a BBC series. I’m still getting over the differences between U.S. and U.K. police procedure, but it was only distracting for the first couple of shows. Now, I’m into it, and I’m only on Season 2, which means I’ve lots of shows to catch up on. Though it’s somewhat inconvenient that every case takes two episodes to be solved, which means I never get the whole story in a single bout on my Elliptical! LOL
.
On the smaller screen … I posted 4 new reviews on my WHAT I’M READING NOW page. The four reviews actually represent 6 books, since I included all three of the existing Richard Castle books in one review.
.
So … LUCAS is almost on his way, which means I now turn to the Cyn/Raphael e-novella. I always love spending time with those two. They were my first, after all. And some of my relatives have been known to suggest that Cyn is me. (I wish!) So, it’s like old home week when I go back to their story.
.
I’m going to get back to LUCAS and look up that one last bit of research, but first, don’t forget to check out the BRENDA NOVAK ON-LINE AUCTION FOR DIABETES RESEARCH. The auction is down to the final days, which is when most of the real bidding gets underway. There are some spectacular items up for grabs, plus a couple of raffle giveaways that you can get in on for only a $10 ticket. I’ve already won two auctions, plus a special one-day giveaway drawing! Yay, me!
.
Okay, have a wonderful week, and I’ll see you back here next Sunday!
.

Rounding the Final Stretch, and it’s (almost) … LUCAS!

Posted by dbreynolds on May 21, 2012

Yep, tonight’s update is a short one, because I’m this close to finishing revisions on LUCAS. Then I’ll send it off to my oh-so-talented writing partners, and while they’re tearing that apart (er, I mean reading and enjoying it) I can do the last few revisions to the first Cyn/Raphael novella and get it off to my publisher. Because, you know, the sooner I get it to HER, the sooner she’ll get it to YOU!
.
And speaking of Cyn and Raphael, so far they’re winning the tally on which couple I should feature in a summer Vignette. I’ve received posts here and on Facebook and elsewhere, plus e-mails, and Cyn and Raphael are ahead so far. Of course, they’re getting that e-novella, too. So, any of you who hunger for some Cyn/Raphael action will have plenty this summer, either way.
.
A quick BITES FIGHTS update … it looks as if Lynsay Sands is going to win the latest bracket, but that’s okay, too. It was AMAZING that DUNCAN was nominated and even more amazing that we made it through that first round. I never thought we’d get this far, and I want to thank all of you who first, nominated DUNCAN, and then went over and voted for him not once but twice. I’m walking away from this fight a very happy author. And by the way, you all should keep voting and keep checking your brackets, because there are some terrific prizes at the end of it all!
.
Media round-up … on the big screen, I FINALLY saw The Avengers and what a terrific movie!! I LOVED IT! Loved Mark Ruffalo as The Hulk/Bruce Banner, lusted after Chris Hemsworth as Thor (although, nothing new there, I lusted after him in THOR, too.) Robert Downey, Jr. is the perfect Tony Stark, and there was so much sly humor in this movie! Legolas! Bwahahahaha. Excellent film. Now I want to see BATTLESHIP and then PROMETHEUS! I think Logan Marshall-Green (from Prometheus) is just the sexiest guy! I loved him in Dark Blue.
.
Moving on down to the small screen … The Killing continues to torment viewers with a new conspiracy every effing week. Just a few more to go, and we’ll finally find out who killed Rosie. But then the question becomes … what happens next? Do Linden and Holder move on to the next case? And, if so, will they make us wait two MORE seasons to find out the killer in that one? Don’t know if I could stick around for that. GRIMM concluded (sort of) with (SPOILERS!) Nick finally telling Juliet about what he was … and doing a really lousy job of it, too! So, now, I guess Juliet is Snow White? Okaaaay. GAME OF THRONES just sort of depressed me this week. Still waiting for Jon Snow’s missing wolf, still can’t understand half of what’s going on there (and I’ve read the books, too.) And I have a question … Rob Stark and Princess Leia (or whoever) are stripping and having sex right there on the rug … don’t they worry about someone stepping into the tent? Just curious. And waiting anxiously for TRUE BLOOD’s premier with fingers crossed that they don’t completely destroy it.
.
Annnd down to the smallest screen, i.e., my Kindle … I’ve a few books to review this week, but they’ll wait until LUCAS’s story is on its way. Not everything I read was review-worthy (remember, I don’t really review, I recommend) but a few definitely were, so I’ll be posting those soon.
.
Okay, I really must get back to LUCAS, now. Happy Victoria Day to all of my Canadian readers, and a good week to all of you everywhere.
.

BITE FIGHTS IS ON (and other stuff, too.)

Posted by dbreynolds on May 14, 2012

BITES FIGHTS is ON! And DUNCAN won its first bracket!! That is sooo cool! And it’s all thanks to you, my wonderful readers. Unfortunately, now DUNCAN’s up against Lynsay Sands. That’s some STEEP competition, although Sands only got four votes more than DUNCAN in the first round, so there’s DEFINITELY hope! Either way, I’m thrilled to have gotten this far! HERE’S THE LINK to the voting site. You click your choices on the listing that runs across the page, and then they show up in the bracket below.
.
More exciting news for anyone waiting for LUCAS … :D I’m halfway through my first draft revisions, which puts me on target for an on-time delivery, which means … well, I’ll wait until I’m sure, but the date looks good. And I’m spending my little bit of free time searching image libraries again. There’s got to be a Lucas out there somewhere.
.
On the entertainment front, I STILL haven’t managed to see The Avengers! I’m really hoping for this week, but the week just got more complicated, so we’ll see. For the small screen, Once Upon A Time aired its season finale last night — MINOR SPOILAGE — the black curse has been replaced by the purple curse? And exactly how is that different? I hope the next season isn’t simply going to be a replay of this season, but with a purple haze. GRIMM was really good, on the other hand. Very creepy at the beginning, although I wish they hadn’t given away the identity of the monster so quickly. It took away most, if not all, of the creep factor. Their season finale is this week, and it looks like Nick is going to have to share his deep, dark secret. Finally!! GAME OF THRONES … lots of dirt, snow and ice. And where the f#ck are the dire wolves? Where’s Jon Snow’s Ghost?? SPOILER: The burned bodies aren’t the Stark children. But does that mean that weasely Theon killed two innocents to make himself look good? Only two more eps there, so don’t look for any answers before next season. On the other hand … TRUE BLOOD starts up on June 10, although the trailer doesn’t resemble any of the books I’ve read. As long as it has Eric and Alcide, I can make do … me and my fast forwarding remote control. :)
.
On the even smaller screen … that would be my Kindle (heh, heh) … I’ve been catching up with Lynn Viehl, C.J.Box, and a new one for me, Richard Castle. Also, John Sandford has a new Prey book out this Tuesday (can you say “Pre-order with 1-click?) which makes me very happy.
.
A question for my readers … if one were to write a new Vignette early this summer, who might you prefer to see featured? I’m not promising anything, but I am taking suggestions!
.
Finally, don’t forget to drop in on Brenda Novak’s Annual Auction. There really is some tremendous stuff being offered, for readers and writers, both. And it’s all for charity.
.
LUCAS awaits, so I’m off to spend some quality time listening to his lovely Irish lilt. Hope everyone’s Mother’s Day was happy, and I’ll see you next week.

A BOOK ISN’T REALLY FINISHED UNTIL …

Posted by dbreynolds on May 7, 2012

Until … the revisions are done. Alas, ’tis true. So I’m in revision mode and will be for a while yet. Still, it’s nice to go back to the beginning and see that it really does all make sense! LOL
.
Staying on the subject of good books (heh, heh) I’ve updated my book recs again, both here and on GoodReads, adding the latest Sookie Stackhouse, among others. Sookie will be leaving fictionland soon, but having read two of Harris’s other series, I’m sure she has something equally wonderful in store for us. And there’s always TRUE BLOOD, which will be returning soon (June 10th) with the in-the-flesh versions of Eric and Alcide … ‘nuf said. :D
.
More good books talk, I’m still hunting for a replacement for my beloved Mitch Rapp (by Vince Flynn), still in withdrawal. I’ve tried a couple of others, haven’t given up completely, but haven’t found the new drug yet, either. Thankfully, John Sandford has a new Prey book out soon, so that will fill in the blanks a bit. And speaking of new and future books, I was a pre-ordering fiend this last week! I went a little crazy with the Kindle 1-click button, preordering into October. But some of my favorite authors have books coming out, and I couldn’t resist. I L.O.V.E. checking my Kindle and finding my new book is HERE already! Such a great feeling.
.
In televisionland, I’ve run out of episodes of Criminal Minds to distract me while I exercise–I’m all caught up on that series. In looking for a replacement, someone suggested The Killing, which I’ve tried, and it’s great! Except now I read that we won’t find out who killed Rosie until the END OF SEASON 2! WTF! That pisses me off, because Season 2 is running now and just started on April 12! Grrrrrrr. So I’m still looking for a series that’s like six or seven seasons old to occupy me and my elliptical for awhile. I don’t particularly like CSI type shows, I do like police procedurals, but don’t really like the whole Law and Order, SVU and all that. I guess I like Criminal Minds, because even though it’s the same investigators, they move around to different cities and solve unique crimes. Oh, well. Maybe I’ll try Being Human, since I’m all caught up on The Fringe. Or, hey! Maybe I should exercise less! ::sigh:: That’s not gonna happen.
.
More televisionland with GRIMM getting better with every episode (now that the season’s almost over!) By the way, how come Nick doesn’t know his Captain is a whatever-he-is, but the Captain knows Nick is a Grimm?? Does Nick only recognize the monsters if they get nervous and do a face-shift in front of him? That’s not very useful. Moving on … ONCE UPON A TIME … hmmm. I still don’t really see how they can drag that one out for another season, but clearly they’re going to try. GAME OF THRONES had some more 13-year-old boy stuff, but some good stuff, too. Loved the scene with Joffrey freaking out about the cowpie, and rushing to safety, while only Tyrion thought to worry about Sansa. A very tense scene with poor Sansa, too. And I can’t figure out if The Hound (whom Joffrey calls “Dog”) is really loyal to Joffrey, or just the throne. He clearly hates it when Joff calls him “Dog.” And thank God someone (Tyrion, of course) finally slapped that little asshole! Once again, Jon Snow is stuck in the frozen wastes with no dire wolf! What’s up with Ghost?? And where was Bran’s wolf (usually so attentive) when that weasel Theon Greyjoy strode in like a drunken rooster? What a loser he is. Good series. Only wish HBO had longer seasons!
.
Before I go, I want everyone to click over to BRENDA NOVAK’S AUCTION FOR THE CURE OF DIABETES. This is a terrific annual event, and if you scroll through the offered items/services, you’ll be amazed. All sorts of wonderful things from your favorite authors, to beautiful jewelry, and fabulous vacations. Some really incredible stuff. I bid every year and I’ve won a few auctions too!
.
Oh yum. As I write this, I have GLADIATOR with RUSSELL CROWE on the screen (no sound, too distracting.) He is so effing good in that, you don’t even need sound. What a beautiful man. ::swoon::
.
::cough:: Okay, I’m back. But only long enough to say good-bye for now. I have to get some more revisions done, gotta get LUCAS on his way.
.
See you all back here next Sunday. Have a great week, and HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY to all of my U.S. and Canadian readers. I’m saying it early since by the time I write my post next week, the day will be over for everyone except … well, me, since I stay up all night long.
.
xoxo
