XAVIER on PRE-ORDER!

Posted by dbreynolds on September 7, 2020

My publisher was full of surprises this week. XAVIER will be released on September 30, and he’s already on pre-order! I’ve listed some buy links below. I think we have all of them except for Apple, but they’re always the last ones to get the post up.

AMAZON Australia

—————
Barcelona—exquisite architecture, masterful artists, and just down the coast, an ancient fortress where an old and powerful vampire lives…and rules all of Spain.

Tall, dark, and deadly, vampire Xavier Prospero Flores waded through blood to destroy his enemies and reach the pinnacle of vampire society—Vampire Lord. He has only one regret in his long life, and that’s the day he rejected the advances of Layla Casales. She’d been too innocent, too naïve, and far too young. But she’d also been his.

Layla Casales was only nineteen when she left Spain, brokenhearted and humiliated by Xavier’s rejection. But now, ten years later, the ties of family are pulling her back, not only to Spain, but to Xavier’s fortress. Her father, the vampire lord’s military commander, is critically ill. Layla has spent years fighting on battlefields around the world, so when her father asks her to come home, she can’t say no.

Though Xavier’s rule began on the ashes of his enemies, it’s not vampires trying to kill him now–it’s humans. He needs to eliminate his enemy before more of his people die. Layla arrives just in time to help, but while she came for her father, the minute she and Xavier see each other, desire burns as hotly as if they’d never been apart. Xavier isn’t going to let her go this time. But before they can rediscover the love they walked away from, they must first keep each other alive.

The STUCK-AT-HOME giveaway has officially ended with two final winners last week. The lockdown has eased somewhat, but it’s not over, and probably won’t be for a while. I still can’t go to the gym yet, but I have enjoyed a few meals with friends in the fresh air and warm sunshine (under an umbrella) of summer. My afghan project is coming along, though now that I have a furry roommate, I’ll have to keep the afghan and its supplies in a drawer, instead of on the floor in front of my recliner. I’ve been bingeing way too many programs and was feeling like a slug, just sitting there, so at least the afghan lets me DO something productive while I binge.

On the writing front, I’ve already started Nick’s book. Obviously Nick’s lived a veeery long life, so my biggest problem has been deciding which time periods for the story to drop by. Nick’s had an awful lot of adventures in his life. By the way, the poll on what to name Nick’s book had a very clear winner. Over 67% of you voted for the title to be NICODEMUS. That’s okay with me, as long as my publisher doesn’t object.

KATO’s book is on sale this month, only $0.99 for the e-book until 9/15/20, from all the usual retailers.

And now I’m back to Nick…and the fur baby will probably want food soon.

Have a safe week, and wear a mask.

xoxo

I’M REALLY BACK!!

Posted by dbreynolds on August 24, 2020

XAVIER (Vampires in Europe, VIA #14) is done! Revised and edited and ready for a cover. I searched through literally thousands of images of half-naked men. You might think that would be a fun thing, except some of those half-naked men really shouldn’t be. (Bless their hearts.) I picked out some of my favorites and sent them off to my my very talented publisher and her art staff. I can hardly wait to see what they design, because my XAVIER is fantastic. This is the longest book of the series so far, because when I was writing, the story just kept getting bigger. I love this book, though. Xavier is the Lord of Spain, the love of his life is Layla, who just might be tougher than Cyn, and the bad guy is Sakal who has a most interesting back story.

So, once XAVIER was all finished I took a few days to rest the brain and exercise the body. I’m taking long walks into the beautiful Santa Monica mountains, and binge-watching all the streaming channels, and now I’m crocheting a quilt. I also took a drive up the beautiful California coast, climbed some rocks, got soaking wet and sandy. And in the evening took in the incredible art installation called Sensorio (in Paso Robles.) The evening we were there, we had a beautiful conflagration of the full moon, Saturn, and Jupiter in the night sky, over the incredible Sensorio. Everyone was wearing masks and being very cautious and polite about social distancing. We all want to stay safe and healthy.
While I was still working on XAVIER, I completed a virtual 5K to raise money for World Wildlife Federation. Participants could walk, run, hike, swim…whatever they could. I hiked 9K actually, because I’m kilometer-to-mile challenged. Somehow I thought it was farther. But I definitely did the 5K and, as promised, I matched the donations from so many wonderful readers and friends, so we ended up donating $220 to WWF.

But now it’s time to work, which means it’s time for Nick’s book. I’m so excited to finally write his story. I’ve been in love with Nick since he first appeared in RAPHAEL more than ten years ago! But first I have a question for my readers. We’re all conflicted about the title of Nick’s book, so I thought I’d see what all of you think.

So click the red arrow to take Nick’s title survey.

—————-
My stuck-at-home giveaway has been going on through all of this, but now that XAVIER’s finished, and we can venture out of the house as long as we’re careful of everyone’s health, I’m going to call an end to it with one LAST giveaway. Next Sunday (08/30/2020) I’ll be drawing two final winners at random, with random values for the last two Amazon e-gift cards. So if you’re not already registered, do it now.

I almost forgot, RAJMUND’s e-book is on sale for only $0.99 until the end of August, so you have a few more days to get it for yourself, or someone else.

And now I’m off to spend some time with Nick. By the way, there’s a teaser for his book at the end of XAVIER. There’s also a teaser for the next Vampires in Europe book, too. We’re in Portugal this time.
Stay safe out there. And do what you can to keep others safe, too. Wear a mask. It’s not a political statement, it’s a life saver.

OUT OF THE CAVE WITH XAVIER

Posted by dbreynolds on July 7, 2020

Did you miss me? I went a little deeper into the cave than usual to finish XAVIER. Since I’m still on lockdown—which is something of a cave existence itself—I disappeared deep into the story ’til the end. XAVIER did go to my editor. And now he’s back and I’m in revision mode, though I actually don’t mind revisions too much.

Even in the depths of the cave, the giveaway has continued. Every Sunday, I’ve pulled a winner and sent out their prize. Of course, we all thought the quarantine—with all of us stuck at home—was going to end, but now with the latest surge in infections, we’re heading right back into lockdown. So the “stuck-at-home” giveaway goes on…at least until I finish XAVIER’s revisions.

So what did I do last week, as I waited for my editor to get back to me? I watched Professor T which is a Belgian TV series featuring an unusual Professor of Criminology and how he helps the local police solve various crimes. It has subtitles, naturally, which means you can’t do anything else while watching. Unless you happen to speak Belgian, which honestly was half the fun of watching the show. The Kingdom of Belgium has three official languages–Dutch, German, and French. And they seem to merge all of them into a single language, with a bit of English thrown in. It was fun, but then…I’m weird.

LUCAS’s e-book is on sale this month. Only $.99 until July 15, 2020. It’s a great price for one of my favorite Vampire Lords.

But now it’s back to work for me. No more getting sucked into TV/Movie series of any kind until XAVIER is once more in the hands of my editor.

Please be safe out there, and wear a mask! It’s the most basic protection you can offer to all the people you love, and to the strangers you pass in the grocery aisle, too.

xoxo

MASKS and a SNIPPET

Posted by dbreynolds on May 20, 2020

When this COVID plague first hit, I didn’t own a single mask. And then, of course, they were nearly impossible to find. But now, everyone is making them. They’re all over Etsy, one of my fellow UCLA alumni is offering them to Bruins at a discount, they’re available in Scottish tartans, your favorite sports teams, superheroes, cartoons, and so many more. And let’s not forget the ordinary medical disposables which are once again available. The picture above is my current collection, although of course I have more on order, because at the beginning, we couldn’t be sure when the ordered masks would arrive.
Here you have me outside the Red Cross donation center, where I gave blood this week. The mask is stylish, though you’ll notice I’m not bothering to blow dry/style my hair. It needs a cut, though I’m not willing to risk anyone’s life to make that happen. No one sees it except me and my niece who stops by every week to make sure I’m still alive and functioning.
To answer the question…yep, I’m still very much alive and writing every night. XAVIER’s story is coming along very nicely, and just for kicks, I’m posting a snippet for your reading pleasure. Note that this is from the unedited manuscript, and may read differently in the final version. This snippet is protected by copyright, and is not to be copied, recopied, shared, or transmitted in any way.
———-
Layla studied him over her wine glass. It wasn’t a hardship. He was so damn pretty. Shit. She set aside the wine. When she was reduced to ogling Xavier over her glass, she’d had enough. “Even if he’s not a powerful vampire,” she said. “He’s still a sorcerer. And the vampirism bestows an extra dose of charisma, too.”

He grinned.

“Oh my God. Don’t do that,” she pleaded silently. That grin raised him from damn pretty to fucking devastating.

“Rest easy, Laylita. I’m in no danger of being charmed by Sakal.”

She blushed, damn it. “I didn’t mean that. I just meant, he’s not helpless and we shouldn’t act as though he is.” She arched her back again, digging her knuckles into the muscle.

“I know,” he said lightly. He walked around his desk until he was behind her. “And you’re right.” His hands brushed hers away as he began massaging her lower back.

She swallowed a groan of sheer pleasure as his strong fingers dug into places she couldn’t reach, the heat of him seeping into bone and muscle.

“Better?” he murmured.

Layla couldn’t talk, afraid of what she’d say. So she just nodded and hoped he couldn’t hear the thumping of her heart or the way her lungs clutched as if she’d forgotten how to breathe. He moved closer, until his warm breath stirred the wisps of hair on the back of her neck, where it had pulled loose from her braid. “Xavier,” she whispered, pleading. Though she wasn’t certain what for.

“Layla,” he whispered back, as his lips touched her neck.

She wanted to tell him to stop. To shove him away and leave. Just leave. But her body wouldn’t cooperate. She stood there, heart slamming against her ribs while every inch of her body begged for more. More of his touch, his voice. More of a body she’d dreamed of for ten years, wondering what if.

2. Return email address MUST BE A VALID EMAIL ADDRESS.
3. Include your first and last name in the body of the email.
4. I WILL SELECT A WINNER EVERY SATURDAY AT 12:00 MIDNIGHT PST. All entries received by that time will be eligible for the drawing. One (1) winner will be selected EACH WEEK at random from among the entries received by the deadline.

REMEMBER: YOU ONLY NEED TO ENTER ONCE TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR THE WEEKLY GIVEAWAY. PLEASE DON’T SEND ME A WEEKLY EMAIL!!!

5. The winner will be notified by return email. She/he will then have five (5) days to respond, after which a new winner will be chosen.
6. One (1) entry per person. ALL duplicate entries will be deleted (and yes, I’ve already had a few. You may think you’re slick, but they’re easy to spot. 😁 )
7. The weekly prize will be an Amazon e-gift card. The amount will vary randomly every week. Even I won’t know what it will be until it happens.

And with that, I’m back to work.
Stay safe. Protect yourself and others…wear a mask.

C19 ROLLS ON, AND SO DO WE!

Posted by dbreynolds on May 5, 2020

Yep, we’re all still here. And it looks like we might be here a while longer. So…….
Two more weekly giveaway winners received their gift cards for my stuck-at-home C19 giveaway. Gotta keep those spirits up somehow. If you haven’t entered yet, here are the rules:

How to enter…
1. Send an email to dbreynoldswriter@gmail.com with HOME 1 on the subject line.

The quarantine isn’t the only thing rolling at my house, though. So is XAVIER’s story! I’m definitely on track for my June 1 deadline, and I might not have to hide in a cave, either. Of course, we’re all sort of hiding in a cave anyway. I’m really happy with XAVIER, and I think my readers will like his mate Layla. She might just be tougher than Cyn. Hard to believe, but true. lol I was supposed to visit Barcelona in March, mostly for location research on XAVIER’s story, but that was cancelled, of course. So, I’m relying on the internet to help me out, and as always, it doesn’t disappoint. Everything can be found if you use the right search parameters. Even some things you’d rather not see. Yikes.
I’m hoping to share a XAVIER snippet with you all soon. I just have to find one that encapsulates Xavier and Layla in a short burst. Not easy to do.

In the meantime, if you haven’t read my Vampires yet, or if you know someone else who might like the books, JABRIL’s ebook is available for only $0.99 until May 15, 2020, on all the usual e-platforms. You’ll be reminded what a bad ass Cyn really is, so you’ll be ready to compare her to Layla. I think they’d be great (and dangerous) friends. Raphael and Xavier would probably prefer they remain far away from each other. The world would never be the same. Hey, that sounds like a good story. Maybe Raphael and Cyn should revisit Europe. Hmmmmm.

But first, Nick. As soon as I turn in XAVIER’s story, I’ll be turning to Nick, aka Nicodemus. His will be the last book of the Stone Warriors, and he’s been waiting since RAPHAEL for his story to be told, so I have to do him justice. I’m excited about it. I’ve always loved Nick.

And so back to work for me. Or, actually, off to bed. It’s nearly 7:00 am here, and I’ve been up all night working, so I’m ready to sleep.

Please stay safe out there, no matter where you are, no matter what choices your authorities are making about social distancing and masks. Take care of you and your loved ones, and you’ll be taking care of everyone else, too.

xoxo
