CAN A VIRUS MAKE YOU A VAMPIRE?

Posted by dbreynolds on March 4, 2013

If you’ve read my books, you know that my answer to the above question is, “YES!” Or close enough. My vamps don’t permit themselves to be studied by science. In fact, they’re quite violent about stopping it. But we know this much — they’re definitely not dead. And what little study has been done tells us they’re infected with something like a symbiotic virus. So I found it amusing when I saw this headline on MSN.com recently, with a very scientific discussion of the subject (you’ll have to wait through the commercial.)

CAN A VIRUS MAKE YOU A VAMPIRE?

But let’s leave science behind for now, and move on to the fun stuff. (Yeah, yeah, I know, some science is fun. I’m a geek, too.) First up … audio books. I’ve had quite a few requests for audio versions of my books, and my publisher has asked me to ask you to go to Amazon and click. Not just any click, but on the button that says you’d like to see (or hear) an audio version of the books. Amazon’s a quirky place, though. Sometimes they have the request link, and sometimes they don’t. But the image below is what you’re looking for. Click the “tell us” link at the beginning of the paragraph. If you get a chance, I’d appreciate it. Thanks!

More fun this month at The Romance Reviews. They’re celebrating their 2nd Anniversary with a big party. Daily giveaways and a Grand Prize, too. I’ll be featured this Thursday, March 7.

Romance Reviews 2013 Anni

I’m writing away every day and night. Aden’s story is developing, but so is Cyn and Raphael’s since I’m writing their next e-novella at the same time. Cyn and Kathryn are having some fun at the expense of certain vampire lords. You just knew those two were going to cause trouble, right? And if you didn’t, Raphael surely did. But it’s the guys’ fault for falling in love with strong women. They can’t be kept down! Mwahahahahaha!

My 100 book challenge continues apace. I’ve updated the list and I’m well on target. I owe GoodReads some reviews. I’ll try to get to those in the next couple of days. Maybe even tonight. Movies — I haven’t been out, since I’m hiding in my writer’s cave, but I did manage to watch Paranormal Activity while I exercised – pretty creepy, I must say. I’d already seen PA2, so was up to speed on that. And then moved on to PA3, which I didn’t think was as good, at least partly because there were continuity errors between it and PA’s 1 and 2. Different writer, I think. TELEVISION — JUSTIFIED continues to make me happy, although I’d be happier if there was a lot more Raylan on camera! >:( .. SUPERNATURAL has returned to its roots, with the Winchesters chasing monsters together, and GRIMM comes back this week! Yay!

All right, back to work, work, work. Someone’s gotta keep Cyn and Kathryn in line.

xoxo

NATE GARRETT IS BACK! (and contest news, too)

Posted by dbreynolds on December 17, 2012

My good friend and critique partner, Steve McHugh, has just released the second book of his Urban Fantasy/Adventure series, The Hellequin Chronicles. Book One was the terrific CRIMES AGAINST MAGIC, and since I’m lucky enough to have read an advance copy of BORN OF HATRED, I can say with confidence that this second book is even better than the first. I’ve included the first chapter below, to tempt you.
.
But before that, a few reminders … there’s a new interview and giveaway this week, and I’ve got two contests that are still going on.
First up is a brand new interview at THE READING CAFE There’s a giveaway and, as always, it’s open to international readers. Stop by and say “hi!”
And don’t forget the two contests still going on. There’s the Mistletoe Madness Blog Hop with tons of cool prizes, and a Grand Prize of a Kindle Fire. Click HERE for details.
And, of course, the ongoing contest just for my readers, with five autographed copies of the Limited Edition print format of BETRAYED, and a Grand Prize that includes a $30 Amazon gift card. Details can be found HERE
.
And now, as promised, the complete first chapter of BORN OF HATRED (HELLEQUIN CHRONICLES BOOK 2) by STEVE McHUGH
————————————————————
Chapter 1

Basingstoke, England. Now.

She lay on the floor, panting. Her chest rose and fell quickly in an effort to get as much oxygen into her body as possible. Her bare midriff, the muscles taut and inviting, the skin tanned and beautiful, glistened with sweat. Only one thought entered my mind. Oh crap.

“You want a drink?” I asked, picking up a bottle of water from the floor.

Sara sat up and caught the cold bottle in one hand when I threw it to her. As she drank, water dripped down her chin, landing just above her sports bra and trickling down between her breasts. I stared at my bottle of water and considered tipping it down my pants. I settled for drinking it, while ensuring that my gaze fell on nothing that could be considered sexy. A stack of blue mats sat at the end of the huge gym hall. There is nothing sexy about a blue gym mat. That did the trick.

“So, you want to go for another round?” she asked.

I turned back to her just in time to catch the half empty bottle of water she’d thrown at my head. “That’s not nice,” I said with a smile. “You’re going to have to be taught a lesson.”

Sara got back to her feet and put herself in a fighting stance. “Come on, old man; let’s see if you’ve still got what it takes.”

I tossed both bottles aside, and deflected the punch I knew was coming. I pushed her arm aside and stepped around her, keeping my distance, making her do the work. Sara might have only been human, and only been fighting for a few months, but what she lacked in experience, she more than made up for in sheer tenacity and quickness.

Her foot spun round, trying to catch me in my ribs, but I blocked it with ease. Unfortunately, she knew what I was going to do and quickly switched tactics, throwing a punch, which I wasn’t positioned to block effectively. I took a glancing blow off my cheek as I dodged aside. “Good shot.”

Sara smiled. She’d remembered not to get dragged into a conversation with the person you’re fighting. Concentrate on the person trying to knock you out, not on trying to chat them up.

She threw another punch, this one meant to distract from her attempt to knee me in the stomach. I wasn’t distracted. I grabbed her thigh, falling back and using my momentum to drag her over and dump her on her back.

What I hadn’t expected was for Sara to grab my arm as she went over, pulling me with her. So, I was the one who ended up on my back, with Sara straddling my chest. Her smile beamed as she undid her ponytail, letting her long blonde hair fall loose over her shoulders.

“Old man,” she said

“You learn quickly.” I tried to sit up and she pushed me back.

“Not yet. You must learn patience.” She laughed, mocking a familiar speech I’d given to her when she’d wanted to learn more quickly than she was capable of.

I pushed her hand away, which caused her to lose her balance. She fell forward, her face coming close to mine. She inhaled sharply as our mouths almost touched. Her pupils dilated and she licked her lips invitingly. I looked into her green eyes and wanted to take her, wanted to feel her naked skin against mine, to feel her moving around me as I entered her. The moment lasted longer than it should have.

“Would Nathan Garret report to Thomas Carpenter’s office? That’s Nathan Garret to Thomas Carpenter’s office.” The loudspeaker announcement brought us both back to our senses.

“We should go,” Sara said, and rolled off me, going over to grab her bottle of water.

I lay on the ground a moment longer, and tried to think of something calming. The gym mats weren’t going to be enough. When finally ready to move, I got back to my feet and made my way to the intercom by the main entrance, pushing the button and informing whoever was on the other end that I would be half an hour. Tommy could come find me himself if it was that important. I didn’t work for him.

“You okay?” I asked Sara, who hadn’t spoken in a few minutes.

“I have a boyfriend,” she said softly. “I love him. I love being with him, he’s fun and sweet and treats me well. Something I’ve not had much experience with.”

“I know,” I said.

“So why do you make me forget all about him? How is it that you have this effect on me? That I want to do incredibly bad things to you every time I see you?”

I shrugged. “I’m sorry, Sara. If you want me to stop training—”

“No,” she snapped. “Tommy and you have told me that if I’m going to be his assistant, I need training. And more than one person has said you’re the best to do that. I just want to be able to train. Without the desire to rip all your clothes off and fuck you on the floor.”

“I don’t know what to say. Maybe we both need a cold shower, and to try and keep it as professional as possible in future. No matter how difficult that might be. I don’t want you to do anything to jeopardise the happiness you have at home.”

“I won’t,” she said, sounding certain. “I can control this. I just need to avoid draping myself over you in future.” She picked up her bag and slung the strap over one shoulder. “I’ll go shower and tell Tommy you’ll be up soon.”

“Thanks,” I said, and then she was gone leaving me with a great desire to bathe myself in ice cold water for the foreseeable future.

As it turned out, once I’d showered and dressed, any longing I felt was buried deep inside me as I walked through the busy office building owned by my friend Thomas Carpenter.

Technically it’s two buildings, one was three stories and the other twenty-five, joined together by a walkway above the staff parking area outside. I looked out of a nearby window, down at the smaller of the two buildings. It’s the only entrance to the larger building, and includes enough security to make getting into the White House seem like a walk in the park. Six lifts, all glass except for the floor and ceiling, each containing a thermal imaging unit and metal detector. Runes, carved into the very structure of the building, ensured that no one could use their abilities unless authorised. I looked down at the small bracelet on my wrist; the runes carved into the wooden beads allowed me to access my magic. Each staff member wore one, even the humans, so that no one could be identified from appearance alone. Each bracelet was designed for that person only, and not all bracelets were created equal.

The larger building had a similar rune structure, carved into the steel and concrete. And it wasn’t overkill. My friend Thomas, or Tommy as he liked to be known, was a Private Investigator, or used to be. Now he runs his own investigations firm, and he’s managed to piss off a lot of powerful people in the process.

But none of the measures were there to protect him. As a six-hundred-plus-year-old werewolf, he’s quite capable of taking care of himself. But he’d never have forgiven himself if his people got hurt because of a lack of care and protection.

I made my way through to the lifts, saying hello to the various people who knew me, and gaining a few odd glances from those who didn’t. When everyone else is wearing smart suits, the man wearing jeans, a hooded top, and carrying a leather biker jacket sort of stands out.

As the lift doors opened, revealing the mirrored walls inside, another loudspeaker announcement sounded. “Can Mr. Garrett please go to the employee parking lot?”

I stepped into the lift and pressed the button for the ground floor. I had no idea what Tommy wanted, but I was already certain it wasn’t going to be good.

By the time I’d reached the smaller building, I’d already devised a dozen scenarios in which Tommy asked me to do something either ridiculous or dangerous. Probably a combination of the two.

I walked along a curved corridor of the smaller building, passing armed guards. I occasionally glanced down through the glass sides at the reception below, until I reached a set of lifts. The green button lit up when I pressed it, flashing slowly as the lift made its way up the three floors toward me. The reception lifts moved slower than the normal ones, and had glass walls, so that the occupants could be monitored.

I took the lift down to the reception and said hi to a few more people as I left through one of the two revolving doors and into the parking lot outside. I found Tommy and Sara standing beside a large, black Toyota Hilux truck. They were deep in conversation which stopped when Tommy saw me.

Sara had changed into a blue blouse, her hair pulled back into a ponytail. She glanced up as Tommy threw something at me, which I caught one handed. A set of car keys.

“Are we going somewhere nice?” I asked.

“Sara, can you give us a moment?” he asked.

Sara walked away to a respectable distance, before playing with her phone and pretending that she wasn’t trying to listen in to Tommy and me.

“I need your help,” Tommy said.

I raised an eyebrow. “Since when do you need my help?” I gestured to the building behind me. “There are a dozen people in there that would die for the chance to help you.”

“I need someone I can trust, no matter what happens.”

“Why? What’s going to happen, Tommy?”

He at least had the decency to look outraged. “Nothing,” he sighed. “It’s recon work I agreed to do to help a client. And I want you to be my backup.”

“Start talking.”

“Fifteen years ago a nasty little bastard by the name of Neil Hatchell attacked and raped seven women. He got out of prison two weeks ago.”

“There’s more to this, I assume.”

“He’s a werewolf, and after he was done beating each of his victims half to death, he bit them. Three died from the change and another one killed herself when she couldn’t cope with what she’d become. He was charged by Avalon with seven counts of rape, three of murder, one destruction of a mind and seven of gene manipulation without consent.”

“So, why isn’t he dead?” I asked. Avalon doesn’t exactly look fondly on crimes like his. In fact it was a surprise that Neil had been arrested at all. Normally the LOA aren’t shy about ending problems on a more permanent basis.

“No idea. Instead they stuck him in the Hole. Third floor.”

The Hole was a prison on an isolated island in the North Atlantic. It’s not on any maps, and has a permanent no-fly zone around it for anyone not associated with Avalon. It’s also one of only three prisons with enough capabilities to handle even the most powerful of creatures. It consists of ten floors, the more dangerous you are the higher the number, and the further underground you’re kept. The first seven are guarded night and day, the last three are left unguarded and it’s up to the prisoners to rule themselves. No one in their right mind wants to be placed down there. I’ve been down there twice. Once I almost didn’t make it back out, and the second time was even less fun.

“Bet that wasn’t a picnic. How the hell did he get out after only fifteen years? He should have served over two hundred years for the deaths alone.”

“Again, no idea. But he’s out and officially can’t be touched, he’s served his time and is a free man. Unofficially… well that’s where we come in. My client wants him checked out. So I want to bring you and Sara with me.”

“You want us to go pay him a visit and make sure he’s behaving himself? So why is Sara coming?”

“She’s my assistant. She’s been here two months, and she hasn’t accompanied anyone on assignment. She needs to know the type of work we do. I figure with me and you there, there’s nowhere safer for her to be.”

“Except in the office here,” I pointed out. “She’s not ready.”

“Is that Nate the fully trained, professional problem solver talking, or Nate’s penis?”

I couldn’t help but chuckle. “My penis hasn’t done a lot of talking lately.”

“She has a boyfriend.”

“Thank you for the relationship advice,” I said. “I know this already. Nothing has happened between us, nor will it. But if something bad happens, she’s had no weapons training.”

“You’ll keep her safe, and you know it.” He turned and walked back toward his truck, waving at Sara to come and join him. He opened the door for her to get in and I sighed and followed. Tommy was right, although I’d have never told him that. Sara did need the experience.

As I opened the driver’s door, I saw a big beaming smile on Tommy’s stupid, smug face, and I already knew I was going to regret saying ‘yes’.

GREETINGS, GIVEAWAYS AND REVIEWS!

Posted by dbreynolds on November 19, 2012

Yes, it’s that time of year again … November … which means the year is almost over and it’s time for holiday shopping. Oh, yeah, and Thanksgiving dinner, too. Personally, I’d be thankful if someone else was cooking dinner. :D

But before we stuff ourselves on turkey, there’s lots more going on, including a series profile for my Vampires over at LITERAL ADDICTION all day today.
Over in their CHARACTER’S CORNER you can read the first ever character interview with lucious LUCAS and KATHRYN. And this afternoon/evening (November 19) I’ll be doing a LIVE CHAT from 8-9 EST/5-6 PST.

And all of that is topped off by GIVEAWAYS at both LITERAL ADDICTION and BOOK MONSTER REVIEWS. There will be a winner’s choice of any book from the series, e-format or print, offered at each site. You can enter using the Rafflecopter for each site at LITERAL ADDICTION and BOOK MONSTER REVIEWS I hope to see you there!

And speaking of chats, the Release Party at Bitten by Books was a huge success, lots of great questions and a terrific giveaway. That giveaway is closed now, but there will be more coming. And there was more wonderful news for my Vampires from Bitten by Books this week. A new review was published giving DUNCAN a whopping 4 1/2 Tombstones!! WooHoo! You can read all about it HERE! Yay for DUNCAN!

I posted my review of Vince Flynn’s THE LAST MAN on MY GOODREADS PAGE . It’s another terrific Mitch Rapp novel, full of intrigue, action and suspense. I’m sad I have to wait another year for the next installment. :( I also posted a short review of Juliana Stone’s e-novella, WRONG SIDE OF HELL, which is the introduction to her new League of Guardians series.

On the small screen, I caught up with GRIMM this week. That show really took off with the second season, with the actors settling into their roles, and the writers focusing on the action and mystery angle. It probably helped (in my estimation) that Juliet was sidelined for much of the season. I don’t find her character appealing and think she detracts from the show. But they KILLED me with their season ender!! It was such a cliffhanger that the producers actually included an apology in the title card at the end. You know it’s bad when that happens. LOL I’m a couple shows behind on SUPERNATURAL, believe it or not. With NaNoWriMo, I just haven’t had time to do as much TV watching. And speaking of NaNo, I’d like to get a few hundred more words in tonight. I’m running behind and need to catch up!
.
So, I’ll sign off with a holiday greeting to my U.S. readers. I went looking for an image to include with this greeting, and I found all sorts of truly disturbing pictures of Thanksgiving food, including far too many of turkeys doing unnatural things. But in the end I went with the classic. So, Happy Thanksgiving. Hope you spend it with those you love and who love you back.

And I hope to see you TODAY over at LITERAL ADDICTION for my LIVE CHAT!

xoxo

COMPELLING!

Posted by dbreynolds on November 12, 2012

That’s how RT Book Reviews’ Anna Dougherty describes LUCAS! Here’s the full review …

In one of the most compelling vampire books I’ve read in a while, Reynolds blends an excellent mix of paranormal elements, suspense and combustible attraction between Lucas and Kathryn. Kathryn is a match for Lucas in every way; she is no shrinking violet. Together they burn up the pages!

I agree!

And so does Artemis, at BITTEN BY PARANORMAL ROMANCE, who awarded LUCAS a Top Bite Award!

Here’s a taste of her review …

I didn’t think it would be possible, but, yes, Lucas Donlon, Vampire Lord of the Plains Territory, has unseated Raphael, Vampire Lord of the Western Territory, as the most bad-ass alpha in the Vampires of America Series. His love for Kathryn, the compassion he has for his people along with the need for vengeance against his enemies make for one powerful complete package.

There’s also a Giveaway going on at BITTEN BY PARANORMAL ROMANCE and a sexy excerpt.

Looking ahead for the rest of this week … there’s big Vampire news on November 16! Some boring, sparkly guy is coming back, but the BIG NEWS is the LUCAS RELEASE PARTY going on THIS FRIDAY at BITTEN BY BOOKS. There will be a $50 Amazon Gift Card up for grabs, so be sure and drop by.
.
I did manage to post my latest book recommendations in between writing and promo stuff. A reminder that I don’t review a book unless I can recommend it. As a writer, I know how much work goes into a book, so I can’t do a negative review. If I don’t like a book, I simply don’t review it. But this week, I added four new recommendations on my GOODREADS bookshelf.
.
And finally, this weekend marks Veterans Day in the United States. It’s a holiday, with lots of people getting a three-day weekend, but let’s not forget what it’s really for. This is the one day a year when we pay tribute to the men and women of our military services, those who have served in the past and those who are still serving today. If you know someone like that, take a moment to thank them for their service.
.
Okay, that’s it for me. I’m going to get some writing done before it gets any later. Enjoy your weekend, and don’t forget the big release party this Friday at Bittenbybooks.com!
.

LUCAS REVIEWS AND GIVEAWAYS CONTINUE!

Posted by dbreynolds on November 5, 2012

Okay, lots to talk about this week. First, LUCAS is now available in paperback. Amazon has it listed, but is showing a 5-8 week delivery. This HAS to be because of their shipping issues as a result of Sandy, because I know my publisher is already shipping and so is BN.com. Be aware, however, that since Amazon is not shipping, BN.com is not discounting the cover price. So, if you want the paperback, you should probably try my publisher’s website instead, because it IS discounted there.

Buy links are:

IMAJINN BOOKS (Paperback and PDF e-book)

BN.com (Paperback only)

AMAZON.com (Kindle e-book, and paperback but w/shipping issues for now)
.
Moving on … there is still time to enter some of the giveaways from last week, including ….

PARANORMAL HAVEN, with a short tale of Lucas at the Harvest Festival and a guest appearance by Kathryn. :)

    Contest ends November 7

.

I SMELL SHEEP. An interview with yours truly, and a chance to indulge your inner anarchist.

    Contest ends November 7

.

THESE DEADLINE DATES ARE ACCURATE TO THE BEST OF MY KNOWLEDGE, BUT SUBJECT TO CHANGE. SO, BE SURE TO CHECK THE GIVEAWAY REQUIREMENTS AND DEADLINES FOR THE INDIVIDUAL GIVEAWAYS.
.
Okay, more giveaways! That’s the old contests, and now for some new ones!

This Tuesday, Nov. 6, I’m at READING BETWEEN THE WINES BOOK CLUB. There’s an excerpt of LUCAS, and a giveaway.
.
And on Thursday, Nov. 8, I’ll be at BITTEN BY PARANORMAL ROMANCE talking about why I like writing books for adults (sex…and other stuff, too) and a sampling of my sweet, sexy Lucas in action.
.
And there’s more to come! But I’ll give you those dates when we get closer.
.
In the meantime, the reviews are coming in on LUCAS, and I think he’s a hit. I know I love him, but I think I’m not alone. Here’s just a couple of excerpts from the Review Blogs that have come in.
.
From LA DEETDA READS …
Action and then more action. Sexy and steamy. This gripping novel is everything you could want in a romantic thriller. The heroine is a no-nonsense FBI agent and the hero is another of D.B. Reynolds’ hot sexy Lords of the vampire nation. The finding of Daniel, her brother, is the catalyst that initiates the “cop” and the vampire’s interaction but then fate intervenes and combines the two into the most satisfying sizzling chemistry.

And from Stephanie at PARANORMAL HAVEN …
A notorious flirt and a man who readily enjoys life’s pleasures, Lucas also has a serious edge and power that when let loose, can be felt far and wide. With a somber past that tugs at your heart and a commendable love and devotion he feels towards his people, Lucas was everything I’d hope he’d be and more.
.
And all of you, my wonderful readers, who have posted reviews on Amazon and shared on Facebook and Twitter! Thank you so much!!
.
It’s been a busy week, keeping up with all the news and writing promo stuff. Plus it’s NaNoWriMo time! For those of you who’ve never heard of NaNoWriMo, it’s an annual November event when 200,000 plus writers worldwide commit to writing 50,000 words in one month. And “commit” is the right word, because we should all be committed for this insanity. But it’s great fun, and I get a lot of work done. In fact, my first draft of RAPHAEL was my NaNo project way back when.
.
When not pounding on my computer, I’m indulging my new TV obsession, which is BIG CAT DIARY!! OMG I love this program! I only wish they’d show the damn episodes in order, because I’m all over the Masai Mara! And I haven’t forgotten the ruggedly handsome Rick Castle — I’m on Season 4. I also ventured to a movie with the DH this week. I persuaded him to see Gerard Butler (of the charming Scots accent) in Chasing Mavericks (in which his Scots accent is nowhere to be heard.) Great surf movie!! And based on a true story.
.
On the book front (that is, OTHER people’s books) I read SCORCHED, the latest from Laura Griffin, one of my favorite authors. I’ll be posting my review on GoodReads later this week.
.
Okay, it’s back to NaNo for me. I need to get some words in before this night is over.
.
Before I go, I want to send my thoughts out to everyone affected by Sandy’s destruction. I have friends and family back there, and it’s been awful for them. I encourage everyone reading this to donate to the Red Cross at WWW.REDCROSS.ORG. This is one of those times when we have to pull together, and give what we can.
.
And finally, if you live in the U.S. … DON’T FORGET TO VOTE!! No matter who your candidate is, voting is a privilege — don’t waste it!
.
See you next week…
xoxo

IT’S ALL ABOUT LUCAS!!

Posted by dbreynolds on October 29, 2012

Yes, my sweet LUCAS couldn’t wait. He showed up early this week in AMAZON’S KINDLE STORE and so far, my readers seem to like him. In fact, a few have even said … well, let’s just say certain other of my vampires have moved down the list a bit. Turns out Lucas is a very popular guy.

Right now, he’s only available in KINDLE FORMAT, but you can pre-order the print books from both Amazon and BN.com. And the links for that are …

AMAZON PRINT

BN.COM PRINT

LUCAS is also listed in the AMAZON UK STORE, although when I pull it up, it says pricing isn’t available. On the other hand, I’ve already had feedback from some of my UK readers, so I’m pretty sure that’s just because the UK site won’t let me order from the U.S.
.
I also have several guest post/giveaways going this week. First up is There’s an interview with Lucas, and a pretty cool giveaway, too. If you were having problems with the Rafflecopter entry, it’s been fixed, so DROP BY AND ENTER!
The giveaway will run until November 5th (extended deadline because of the Rafflecopter complications.)
.
Next is Paranormal Haven’s HALLOWEEN AT THE HAVEN 2012 on TUESDAY, OCTOBER 30TH!
There’s another great giveaway, PLUS an exclusive short story tale of Lucas’s visit to the local Harvest Festival.
.
And THEN … on THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 1st,
I’ll be over at I SMELL SHEEP where Sharon and Katie took time out from their preparations for the Zombie Apocalypse to interview your favorite author (ahem, me), plus yet another great giveaway!

And I think that’s it for me this week! Lots of stuff going on with my new sweetheart, Lucas! I hope you’ll all love him as much as I do.
.
In the meantime, if you live in Sandy’s path, please take care of yourself and be safe. I want you all right back here with me next week, when I’ll have lots more giveaways, plus the first reviews.

Signing off from sunny So Cal (I’m sorry!)

ARGH!

Posted by dbreynolds on October 22, 2012

That’s right. I’m saying “Argh!” and it’s not even Talk Like a Pirate Day. ::sigh:: As I noted on my Facebook page, the gremlims of email are at it again. An essential email from me to my publisher was waylaid during the week, delaying LUCAS’s early release, which we’d actually hoped would be this past week. I sent the email last Sunday, but we didn’t realize it had gone astray until Friday night!! Argh, indeed.

But, it’s all been corrected now, so I’m hopeful LUCAS will appear on Amazon sooner, rather than later. I’ll maintain my Amazon watch and let everyone know as soon as it pops.
.
In the meantime, several LUCAS ARCs have gone out, and I’m already getting feedback, all of it good. I hope you all will love him as much as I do. He’s definitely one of my favorite vampires. And speaking of ARCs and reviews, the first of many promo events will happen this Wednesday, October 24, with a series spotlight and e-book giveaway over at LITERAL ADDICTION. Please drop by and leave some love! And maybe win a copy of LUCAS, too!
.
So … other than throwing up when I found out that my email had been tossed into the black hole that is the internet (heh, heh, It wasn’t QUITE that bad. :) ) I spent my week working on a couple of upcoming guest posts, and my new story which is progressing very nicely. I also posted my review of Eileen Wilks’ Mortal Ties on MY GOODREADS PAGE And since finishing that book, I’ve been going through my TBR pile, trying and tossing (or filing) one book at a time, looking for one that grabs and HOLDS my attention. No luck so far, which is sad, but my TBR pile is both e and print, and it has a lot of depth, so I’ll find something eventually. And there’s always Laura Griffin’s newest release, SCORCHED which comes out on 30 October, and which I’ve (naturally) pre-ordered. Not to mention my favorites shelf (or e-file) which has those books I can always turn to for a great re-read.
.
No movies for me this week, no time. But on the small screen, I’m totally hooked on CASTLE. I’m now up to Season 3, and already despairing that I’m going to run out soon, and then I’ll have to find something else to distract me from the punishment that is the elliptical. I keep waiting for that endorphin rush everyone talks about. You know, the one that makes exercise so pleasurable? But it just ain’t happening! LOL I’m also really liking ELEMENTARY, the new Sherlock Holmes adaptation with Johnny Lee Miller as Sherlock and Lucy Liu as Watson. And, of course, the Winchester boys are back on SUPERNATURAL, and I’m happy to say they’re pursuing regular old creepy cases while continuing the search for Kevin (the prophet who can read the Word of God.) I’m not a fan of giant (i.e., unbelievable) conspiracies, and really prefer the good old monster bashing stories.
.
Hmm, okay I think that’s it for me this week. Don’t forget to drop by LITERAL ADDICTION for the e-book giveaway, and hopefully by this time next week, we’ll all have LUCAS on our hot, little Kindle readers! :D
.
See you back here next Sunday night, with news of LOTS more giveaways, along with guest posts that include some special glimpses of Lucas’s life.
xoxo

THIS is going to be a busy month!

Posted by dbreynolds on October 1, 2012

And you know why, right? Because LUCAS comes out this month! Squeeeeee! Ahem. Pretend you didn’t hear that part. But LUCAS is very close now. His official debut will be October 30, but I’m hoping the e-version will pop a little early. It’s hard to predict—Amazon seems to have neither rhyme nor reason these days—but I’ve told my publisher it’s better to be early than late, right?
.
Anyway, I’m pretty excited. I’ll be working on the final edits this week, and I’ve posted the back cover copy below, so you’ll know what’s in store.
.
THE BADLANDS of SOUTH DAKOTA … haunting landscapes, legendary outlaws, and … vampires?

LUCAS DONLON is a Vampire Lord, one of the most powerful vampires in North America and beyond. Charming and irreverent to his friends and lovers, he enjoys everything about his life as a vampire. But when a neighboring vampire lord declares war, he soon discovers that Lucas is as every bit as lethal as he is charming.

KATHRYN HUNTER doesn’t care about powerful vampires or their wars. Her baby brother is missing and she will do anything to find him, even if it means going against both her FBI bosses and the local vampire lord. But Lucas Donlon has other plans for the lovely FBI agent who’s landed on his doorstep.

Waging war against their enemies and each other, Lucas and Kathryn will risk everything to keep the most deadly vampire war in hundreds of years from engulfing every vampire, and human, in North America.
.
I’ve also updated LUCAS’s page HERE in case you want to gaze at his golden eyes while you read the blurb. Although I’m not sure that’s actually possible. Hmmmm.
.
Back to my busy month … once I’ve finished the edits, I’ll be getting ready for a very busy round of promos and guest blogs. That all starts with Paranormal Haven’s annual HALLOWEEN AT THE HAVEN. It’s a tradition, and I’m so happy to be part of it again this year. Lucas and I will be there on October 30 (release day!) and we’ll see just what Lucas does for Halloween … at least this year.

My review backlog is building up. I’ve read some good books over the last couple of weeks, so I have to get busy … um, right. ‘cuz I’m not busy at all. :D I’ll try to get those posted on GoodReads this week, though. Small screen report … GRIMM was excellent, although it looks (from the preview) as if Juliet is going to be around more. Too bad. But the show seems to have found its rhythm this season. Didn’t watch ONCE UPON A TIME yet. I’m not sure I want to, since everything I read indicates it’s going to be a replay of last season with slight changes. I guess they can’t help it, since they’re sort of trapped in the town with a limited number of characters. But that doesn’t mean it’s interesting. I can’t say for sure until I watch it though. STRIKE BACK is still one of my favorite shows. I never fail to watch that one. And I’ve started watching THE GUARDIAN on Netflix while I exercise. That’s a series than ran from 2001-2004 with Simon Baker (The Mentalist.) It’s pretty good. Good enough to distract me from the damn exercises anyway. :D
.
I’m sure I’m missing something, although you don’t need to know about the GIANT black and white muffin I ate at Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf this morning! It was shamefully delicious. Which is why I’ll be exercising again tomorrow. (heh, heh)
.
Okay, back to work with me. I’ll be back next week, same time, same place.
xoxo

COME ON, HALLOWEEN!!!

Posted by dbreynolds on September 17, 2012

Well, honestly, despite these cool Klingon pumpkins, it’s not Halloween so much as it is … LUCAS!! My new favorite vampire just happens to debut on the eve of Halloween, and it can’t come soon enough for me. And just to prove it …
.
But wait! We’ve got some BETRAYED news up first! I’m over at READING BETWEEN THE WINES BOOK CLUB with a guest post on WHY VAMPIRES? (I mean, really, why NOT?) and an excerpt from BETRAYED, as well as a GIVEAWAY. Stop by, take a read, leave a comment, gimme some love, enter the giveaway …
.
Oooh, I have BUFFY on my TV (no sound – I’ve seen all the eps at least twice) and it’s the episode where Faith takes over Buffy’s body. Excellent! :D
.
I caught up on my book reviews this week, a whole bunch of reviews!! You can find all of them on
MY BOOKSHELF AT GOODREADS.COM
.
.
A very short small-screen report, mostly because there’s not much to report! I saw my favorite Spec Ops guys in action on a new episode of STRIKE BACK (Cinemax)– love that show! And Saturday Night Live had its season debut … although, as bad as it was, they might want to pretend it never happened. I’m a fan of Seth MacFarlane, but, man, this was not good. And why, if Fred Armisen isn’t leaving, did they switch over to Jay Pharoah as Obama? I’ve never thought Pharoah’s impressions were all that great, and his Obama was not good at all. But then neither was the show. Even Seth Meyer’s Weekend Update was dull. “Disappointed!” (Anyone recognize that one word line? Know the movie?)
.
And now, about my sweet LUCAS … a small excerpt just because I can’t wait!! (This is from the final draft, not yet edited by my publisher, so it might not be exactly what shows up in the book.)
.
He found Kathryn exactly where Nicholas said she’d be, with the sweet smell of fresh hay and horses all around her, using a curry comb on Sassy, who despite her name, was one of his more mild-tempered mares. Kathryn had donned a pair of faded denims, and they showed her ass to perfection, just as he’d known they would. Much better than the boxy slacks she’d worn the previous night. The barn was warm, despite the cool night air, and she was working hard. A tailored blouse hung outside the box stall, leaving Kathryn in a stretchy white tank top that accented her smoothly muscled arms with every stroke of the comb.
Lucas tilted his head and listened. Kathryn was talking to the horse as she worked, speaking so softly that even his vampire hearing couldn’t pick up the words.
He started to say her name, then changed his mind. She was so entranced with the animal and the repetitive motion of the curry comb that she hadn’t even noticed he was there. The mare noticed him, of course. But after a soft whicker of greeting, she ignored him. Which left only Kathryn. Walking as quietly as only a vampire can, he stepped up right behind her and dipped his face into the crook of her neck, inhaling deeply as he deposited a soft kiss just below her right ear.
Kathryn gasped and spun around, her hand going to her hip, looking for the weapon she’d left sitting on the tack box beneath her shirt. That didn’t hamper her any, however. She swung the damn curry comb instead, and if he hadn’t been a vampire, he’d have been wearing more than a few stripes on his face.
Lucas caught her wrist gently, laughing in both surprise and appreciation. He did love a woman with spirit. And he should have expected it from Kathryn Hunter, he thought ruefully. After all, a woman didn’t make it in the man’s world of the FBI without being able to take care of herself. Nor did such a woman traipse halfway across the country looking for her missing brother. He was lucky he wasn’t sporting a bloody face about now.
Kathryn wrenched her arm away from him and shoved him back a step. Neither of which she could have done if he hadn’t let her, but she didn’t know that yet.
“You’re lucky that pretty face of yours is still intact,” she snarled angrily.
Lucas widened his eyes. “Was that a compliment, Agent Hunter?”
“No, you ass, that was a warning. Don’t ever sneak up on me again. What if I’d been armed?”
“Then I trust you’d have held me gently as I bled onto all this nice, clean straw.”
She bit her cheek trying not to smile, but it was a lost battle. “Are you ever serious?” she said, trying to recover lost ground.
“Only when I have to be.”
.
.
.
Okay, so say it with me … COME ON, HALLOWEEN!

xoxo

THE DOG DAYS OF SUMMER …

Posted by dbreynolds on September 10, 2012

And it’s HOT! I remember the first time my darling husband showed me this house. It was July and my first thought was … but it’s so hot! LOL We’d lived in Malibu where it’s almost always cool, even when it’s sunny, and okay, so this lovely canyon is mostly cool, but all of the places I need to go to shop, etc. are HOT. Yeah, yeah, I know. Stop complaining. But summer just isn’t my season!
.
But not to worry, the winter holidays will be here before you know it! 4 months! Better start shopping now! Mwahahahahaha!
.
Okay, on to GIVEAWAYS!! There’s a brand new giveaway going this week over at BITTEN BY PARANORMAL ROMANCE This Tuesday, SEPTEMBER 11th, there will be a new review of BETRAYED, plus a giveaway of the novella. And rumor has it the review will be a good one. There are more giveaways to come, and for LUCAS there will be even more, so stay tuned.
.
On to the big screen … I finally saw The Dark Knight Rises this week! Great movie. Not as good as The Avengers, but still … great movie. Christian Bale is not my favorite actor, but I have to admit he makes a good Batman.
.
I’m still working hard, working on a new idea, plus I’ve started outlining the next VAMPIRES novel, annnnd the next Cynthia & Raphael e-novella, too. But, of course, if I’m alive, I’m reading, and this week one of the books I finished reading was ARCHANGEL’S STORM, the latest Guild Hunter novel by the wonderful Nalini Singh. Even if I didn’t love Jason—an angel who’s one of the Archangel Raphael’s Seven and whom the story is about—I’d love the book, because Singh’s writing is a joy to read. Next up is EXPOSED by Alex Kava, which involves biological terrorism. Yikes.
.
On the small screen, I’m waiting along with everyone else for the new seasons to begin. Although, I did have the pleasure of a new STRIKE BACK with my favorite special ops guys. I love that show!
.
Okay, it’s back to work for me. Have a great week, and don’t forget to stop in at BITTEN BY PARANORMAL ROMANCE to check out the review of BETRAYED and to maybe win a copy of your very own!
.
