AND HOW DID YOU SPEND YOUR WEEK?

Posted by dbreynolds on July 30, 2012

My week was devoted to RWA’s National Conference. Getting ready for it, fighting traffic to get there (groan) and BEING THERE! It was terrific.
.
First, there was the Literacy Signing, and so many of my readers came by to say “Hi!” Of course, most of you already had the books, but a few bought autographed print versions, so I did my part for the fundraising. It was so nice to meet so many readers, both at the signing and in other Con events, so many of you I “see” here and on Goodreads, and to meet you in person was lovely. Lynn Marshall, who was sitting next to me at the Signing, commented how enthusiastic my readers were and how much they loved the books! And I couldn’t agree more. I’m a lucky, lucky writer to have such wonderful readers!
.
I have a couple of pictures from the Signing, too. First up is me and Stephanie from PARANORMAL HAVEN. Steph and Athenna have hosted me at the Haven many times, and I was so happy to finally meet Stephanie in person.
.
And then … one of my personal favorite authors, the oh so talented Nalini Singh, was signing just a few feet away, so I dropped by to tell her how much I love her books and grab a picture.

I met so many talented writers, including the lovely Morgan Ashbury—who happens to be a fellow member of Kelley Armstrong’s OWG—and I spoke with agents and editors and booksellers, and even hostage negotiator, Lt. Michael Woodcock who gave a very informative workshop along with his wife, the bestselling author, Angela Knight. And I won the giveaway ARC of Angela’s forthcoming book, too! I took lots of notes, so now I need to write a story with that scenario in it!
.
So, yes, it was great. But so was coming home at last. I was ready to sleep for a day! Unfortunately, there was laundry to do. LOL But it’s still nice to be home and not have to face L.A. traffic for a while.
.
Believe it or not, I didn’t watch this week’s TRUE BLOOD yet! I just haven’t had time to catch up on TV shows. They’re waiting on my DVR for me, though, so I will watch them and report later. Speaking of TV shows, THE KILLING, which I really enjoyed, but which lost A LOT of viewers when it didn’t reveal Rosie’s killer until the end of Season 2, will NOT be coming back for a third season. The way they ended Season 2 was a big clue, but there really wasn’t anywhere for them to go with Season 3. And my favorites LONGMIRE and FALLING SKIES both took a break for the Olympics.
.
Now, back to Vampires in America … I still don’t have a cover for the first CYN/RAPHAEL e-novella. My artist had a family crisis that had to take precedence. The cover’s almost done, but not quite. I do however have a title … and a release date!! BETRAYED will release on AUGUST 15th. So, just a couple of weeks and you’ll have a brand new Cyn/Raphael e-novella to read!! And I’ll be doing some promo with giveaways, which I’ll announce before then.
.
Well, that’s it for this week. I will watch TRUE BLOOD and let you know what I think so far. And I will try very hard to get some book reviews up, now that the crush of RWA is over with.
.
See you back here next week!

xoxo

I’M GOING TO RWA … and other news!

Posted by dbreynolds on July 23, 2012

Yep, I’m off to the RWA National Convention this week (that’s the Romance Writers of America, btw.) It’s my first national RWA con, and I’m excited about meeting several on-line friends in person at last. Plus, all sorts of interesting workshops and meetings. And I’ll be taking my camera, so … pictures!!

Most of the conference is for attendees only, but on Wednesday, July 25, there’s the big “Readers for Life” Literacy Autographing, with 400 authors, including yours truly. It’s open to public, and there’s no admission fee, but there are no outside books allowed. It’s a fundraising event, with all sales proceeds going to several organizations promoting literacy. Numbered among the 400 authors participating will be …
.
Nalini Singh (one of my personal favorite authors)
Nora Roberts (it doesn’t get much better than that!)
Sylvia Day
Victoria Alexander
Robyn Carr
Brenda Jackson
Christine Dodd
Jayne Ann Krentz
Stephanie Laurens
.
And me! I’ll be at Table #905, along with several hundred other writers. I mean, they won’t all be at table #905, but they will be in the ballroom with me! LOL
.
So, if you’re in the vicinity, stop by and say “Hi!” Here are the details:
.

July 25, 2012, 5:00 — 8:00 p.m. PST
Anaheim Convention Center
Ballroom, 3rd Floor

.
In other (very exciting!) news, I’ll probably have a cover for the Cyn/Raphael e-novella to show you for next Sunday’s blog post. Plus, I’ve completed the revisions and sent them back, and the e-novella release is looking good for mid-August! The story will be in e-format only, through Amazon’s Kindle store and the ImaJinn Books website (www.ImajinnBooks.com.) Once we have the first four e-novellas, we’ll offer a print omnibus, but until then, it’s e-format only.
.
And now for my weekly (almost) TV report … SPOILERS FOLLOW!! … First up, TRUE BLOOD, and I have only one thing to say … WTF? Okay, I lied. I have more to say than that, but it all follows that theme! First, we discovered that Tara can’t dance. I disagree with Pam. She’s a better BARTENDER!!! And then somehow Russell Edgington went from being trapped in a silver net to being the new, um, Guardian? Is that what he is? I actually played those scenes back, because I couldn’t figure out how that happened. Did I miss some pithy dialogue somewhere? And then half-naked Alcide (always a good thing) spoils the perfection of his sweaty physique with a pitiful doo-rag that for some reason has to hang halfway down his forehead. Looked ridiculous. And, boy, did he move on quickly from Sookie to his new honey bunny … or wolfie, whatever!! And why was Jason bringing Sookie breakfast (or lunch, same thing) in bed? She looked perfectly fine when they left the fairy bar, so why is she now an invalid? Makes no sense. And let’s not forget Sam rolling around on the floor, sniffing out bad guys. Or the poor little white girl who can’t sing warbling out “You Light Up My Life” (my ears are still bleeding) and making cow eyes at her boyfriend(?), and suddenly the bar’s invaded by vamps drunk on vamp blood (huh?) who then proceed to kill everyone in the place. And yet, amazingly, the cops never show up. Reminded me of Sunnydale for a minute. (Geek moment – that was a Buffy reference.) And Lafayette with his mouth sewn shut, which by the way I’ve seen too much of lately. There was an episode of Waking the Dead, which I recently watched on DVD, in which someone sewed up his own lips as part of a starvation protest. Gross. Now, I know those of us who read the books have a different take on the TV show, but … I repeat, WTF?
.
Let’s see, what else did I watch? I’m totally hooked on LONGMIRE on A&E. Love that show. There are only two episodes left and already I miss it!! Although I take comfort in knowing it was renewed for another season. Not much comfort, but some. And my new DVD obsession is THE CLOSER And then there’s FALLING SKIES. I’m totally creeped out by the alien giant spider things scritching their way through metal doors. Gives me the shivers. And I admit, I got a little teary-eyed when Ben left, though I’m sure we’ll see more of him. I have a feeling Charleston (or is it Charlotteville?) is going to be a disappointment, though.
.
Books! I have so many to review. I’ll try to get to those this week. Though, I’m not sure how much free time the conference will leave me.
.
I want to thank everyone who wished me a Happy Birthday! And I’m glad you all liked your prezzie!!
.
Okay, I really have to get some more writing done on my new project, plus some other stuff that MUST BE DONE before I go off to the Con. So, I’ll see you all here next week, hopefully with a cover shot of the new Cyn/Raphael e-novella!
.

THE CONTEST IS CLOSED … AND OTHER STUFF!

Posted by dbreynolds on April 9, 2012

Yep, the NAME THAT WOMAN contest is officially over. I received hella entries and they’ve all been numbered. I’ll rev up the random number generator this week to pick the winner and announce it on this blog next Sunday.
.
For the record, the correct answer was DEB JENKINS. Most of the entries got it right, some few had it wrong, which makes them ineligible. Sorry about that.
.
It’s April, which means … ugh … taxes. At least in the U.S. I was talking (emailing) a friend in England last week and discovered they don’t have to file tax returns like we do. No kidding? You mean there’s an income tax system that makes more sense than the twisted, tortuous, ridiculously complicated system we have? Huh. Who’d have thought it? (huge eye roll – I need some better smilies for this blog.)
.
Of course, I might just be bitter, having spent hours and hours this week putting together paperwork and entering data, instead of finishing the story of my darling LUCAS. I haven’t neglected him completely, however, his story is very nearly completed. I can see the end from here! LOL
.
And speaking of ends, there seems to be NO end to my current trio of obsessions, i.e., past seasons of CRIMINAL MINDS on DVD (at least I exercise while I’m watching those,) Adam Levine/Maroon 5 singing Stereo Hearts with Travie McCoy on SNL, and Vince Flynn’s Mitch Rapp thriller/suspense novels. By the way, the link I posted last week for the Adam Levine video was pulled by NBC the next day. Do you think I was responsible for that? Yikes! LOL
.
In other news, the RT Booklovers Convention begins this week in Chicago, and many of my favorite writers and friends will be there. Not me. So sad. It’s a truly fun convention, but I just couldn’t do Chicago this year. ::sigh:: I’ll definitely be participating in the future, though. RT Con is really designed with the reader in mind. If you ever have the opportunity, I recommend it highly. I will be at RWA’s National Conference in July, though! Although, that’s definitely geared for writers/editors/agents, rather than readers. But more on that much later.
.
Not all is dreary and taxes here on the homefront, however, Game of Thrones had its season opener last week, and I watched Ep 2 earlier tonight. Major cliffhanger ending … unless you’ve read the books, of course. (heh, heh) This series is so well done! And Once Upon A Time is back with reruns! Ugh. Grimm has a new twist. SPOILER: Personally, I wouldn’t mind seeing Nick and Juliet part ways, but I doubt that’s where they’re going with it. :D
.
And finally, last but MOST DEFINITELY not least, my writing partner Steve McHugh is about to publish his very first novel, CRIMES AGAINST MAGIC. It’s a terrific story of fantasy, mystery and adventure. Lots of action and excellent writing. And you can read the Prologue for FREE this week on STEVE’s BLOG. You should definitely CHECK IT OUT!
.
Hmm, okay, that’s it for me this week. I’ve got to get back to LUCAS before he forgets who really loves him. (That would be ME!)
.
See you all next week with the contest winner, and more random thoughts! Oh, and Happy Passover and/or Happy Easter! Hope it was wonderful.

SOPHIA’S KICK-OFF!

Posted by dbreynolds on April 18, 2011

I’m over at PARANORMAL HAVEN all day today answering questions. Or, I will be once we here on the West Coast (PST) wake up to a new Monday morning. Steph and Athenna of the Haven are in California, too, so we’re a little beyond y’all. There’s a review of SOPHIA, a new interview with yours truly that includes hints for future books, and a book giveaway, so come on by and say Hi.

SOPHIA is kicking a$$ and taking names! She’s even giving RAPHAEL a run for his money and the big guy is NOT pleased! He’s slightly mollified by the knowledge that it’s his wonderful presence driving some of SOPHIA’s sales, however. You may have noticed the vamp’s got a healthy ego. Shocking, but true.

SOPHIA’s now available on Amazon in both Kindle and print format, and on BN.com in print only. My publisher is working on getting our books into Nook format, but we’re not there yet. I’m expecting Fictionwise.com to come on line by the middle of the week, though. They’re usually a week behind Amazon and BN. So, hopefully in a couple of days, I’ll be able to give you the Fictionwise buy link.

I’m also throwing a release party for SOPHIA at Bitten by Books on Friday, April 29st. Another interview, another super giveaway, but I’ll be posting details about that in a couple days.

I’ve recovered from RT at last. What a great party that was … the whole four days. Crazy and exhausting, but one of the best conferences I’ve ever attended. And that means I’m back working on DUNCAN and NO! You can all stop asking! I’m NOT giving any hints. I’m playing this one very close to the vest, as they say. Although I will torment you by saying Duncan is even more wonderful than you know. :-D

I want to thank all of my wonderful readers who’ve e-mailed me and blogged and posted on FB and Amazon about how much they love SOPHIA! You’ve spread the word about my vamps and put them on so many lists. You all are the greatest readers in the world and I appreciate every one of you. I literally couldn’t do this without you.

Okay, I’ve made myself all weepy and happy now. So it’s time to go work on Duncan some more! Yippee!

I’ll see you all soon with more details of parties and promos.

RT 2011 and SOPHIA’S EARLY REVIEWS!!

Posted by dbreynolds on April 11, 2011

First things first, the lovely SOPHIA is garnering rave reviews from early readers, which means those on Kindle and those who downloaded the PDF from ImaJinn. I’m hopeful the print version will show up on Amazon and BN.com this week, but I’ll keep an eye out and let you know the MINUTE it’s available. And Fictionwise usually runs a week behind, but I’ll keep an eye out there, as well.

In the meantime, I truly appreciate all of the e-mails and posts, both here and on FB and Amazon, telling me how much you loved SOPHIA. It’s a nerve wracking thing to release a new book and it’s such a relief to know my readers love it.

Of course, now everyone wants to know when DUNCAN will be out! I’m taking a few days to bask in the glow of SOPHIA (and catch up on my sleep from RT) and then it’s back to working hard on Duncan’s story, which is already halfway finished. When I do get back to him, it will be pure pleasure, ‘cuz Duncan is MmmMmmGood. :-D

And, of course, RT was this week! The big excitement was picking up my RT Reviewer’s Choice Award for JABRIL. No one warned me I’d be giving an acceptance speech, so I had to come up with something on the fly. But I managed not to fall down on the way to or from the stage, so it’s all good. And the award is beautiful, isn’t it?

I’ve posted a few more pictures on my Facebook page. I didn’t take that many. I was too busy looking at stuff and finding my way around. There were so many fantastic panels and books, books everywhere!!

And it was so great to meet in person so many people I “speak” with on-line all the time, including Adrian Phoenix, D. P. Lyle and Rachel Caine, to name a few, along with Mertianna Georgia, who’s a new ImaJinn author. And I was surprised at how many of my readers were there, including Mary (aka Amy) who won the name a bar contest for SOPHIA, and so many others—from all over the world, especially from Down Under!!—who made a point of coming up and telling me how much they loved the books! It made my week!!

I’m sure there’s more I want to say, and probably stuff I’m SUPPOSED to cover this week, but I’m still recovering from four days of non-stop RT. I slept 10 hours when I got home and I’m looking forward to sleeping some more tonight. By tomorrow night, though, I’ll be back on schedule and working hard.

So, see you all next week, if not sooner. Hopefully I’ll have word of the SOPHIA print version before then. Fingers crossed!
